The Department of Forest & Wildlife, UT Chandigarh has developed Chandigarh Bird Park at Nagar Van behind Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh for creating awareness among general public towards bird conservation especially the young minds on nature education and conservation. Smt. Savita Kovind, Hon’ble First Lady of India inaugurated the Chandigarh Bird Park on 16th November, 2021. The Park have been created for the exotic birds which are commonly bred in India.

The best time to visit Bird Park Chandigarh is between November and March when the weather is cool. Also, your eyes can catch these birds during the morning time as they are more at that time.

This project is very ambitious and aims to spread awareness among the public not just about bird conservation but also the importance of wildlife in Chandigarh in general. The aviaries that have been constructed here house some of the most beautiful and exotic birds which are commonly bred in the Indian subcontinent. The enclosure is such that the birds are able to fly around freely just like they would in their natural habitat and can also nest, mate, feed, flourish, and breed without fear and any human intervention. The terrestrial plants, lush greenery, trees, ferns, shrubs, bushes, and several aquatic plants, and creepers make for a blissful sight to behold.

The park boasts of having nearly 550 exotic birds and 48 species within its territory. The surrounding plants and shrubbery that span over acres of land are enough to make the birds feel at home. The entire setup is meant primarily for the conservation, rehabilitation, nutrition, breeding, and management of birds, especially the endangered ones from all across the country. Significant and visible efforts have been made to create and imitate the most ideal habitat for almost all the exotic birds that the park shelters right now. It is also believed to house the tallest aviary that has ever been made for exotic birds in the country. The Bird Park has two different aviaries for terrestrial birds and aquatic birds. The walk-through aviaries offer visitors a unique and exciting experience.

One thing that you can always give Chandigarh credit is the massive designs of gardens and parks. The Chandigarh Bird Park is no different with its beautifully crafted benches, intricately designed pathways, tracks, and scenic landscape. This bird sanctuary in Chandigarh is being touted as one of the most serene and beautiful places ever to have been planned here. The park has already grabbed the title of “Mini Paradise” for bird lovers from the local citizens and visitors.

Main Attraction
Tamed Bird Section (Winged Wonders)
Main attractions of this Park are African Love Birds, Budgerigars, White Swan, Black Swan, Wood duck, Golden Pheasant, Yellow Golden Pheasant, Green Wing Macaw, Sun Conures, African Grey Parrot, Finches and Melanistic Pheasant and many others. The Chandigarh Bird Park has different exotic bird species.

Apart from providing world-class facilities and close-to-perfect habitat to several species of birds , the park is also equipped with the most modern infrastructure that will facilitate visitors to interact with the birds seamlessly. You will also be able to touch and play around with tamed birds under the supervision of staff members. I found winged wonders the best section in the entire bird park as here you get the opportunity to have a close interaction with feathered friends such as grey parrot, macaw and pheasants.

Aquatic Aviary
The rock and duck section of the Walk-in Aviary has aquatic birds including migratory ducks, White & Black Swan an many other varieties of ducks.

A glass bridge towards the last section of aquatic aviary has been set up beneath which fishes of many varieties have been kept such as golden and sliver fish etc.

Creating awareness on birds
The Department of Forest and Wildlife of The Chandigarh Union Territory came up with this project not only to entertain the citizens but to educate them as well. Exotic birds can be found all around the world and more than 10% of their population resides and flourish in India. These birds commonly breed across the Indian subcontinent and the department aims to create awareness among the general people about their habitat and the struggles that they face post industrialization, especially in a developing country like India.

Cafeteria
Once you are done birdwatching throughout the aviaries, you are sure to get hungry. Luckily for you, at the exit point of the bird park, there’s a cafeteria where you can enjoy light snacks and drinks.
